At the beginning of the year I joined up to the gym. Why? To create a healthier lifestyle for myself. I have never really been 'fat', but I have had a bit of extra weight on me which I'm slowly, but surely working off. I'm not saying I want to be skinny, I'm saying I want to be fit and toned.
As you can see from some of the photos below, I have an hourglass body shape (where your bust and hips are approximately the same size and the waist is narrow) so naturally I will have larger thighs in proportion to the rest of my body. Most of you will have heard of the 'thigh gap', and for many years that's exactly what I wanted. Until I learnt that being "skinny" isn't always the healthiest. Being fit and toned is so much more important then having a thigh gap, so I have been focused on toning my body and becoming as healthy as possible.
Don't get me wrong, I slip up often. I still cant resist a piece of cake if its someones birthday, or eating Nutella straight out of the jar when it comes in with the latest groceries, or even having a piece of chocolate after dinner. I'm still learning to control what I consume. The more healthier foods I'm eating, the worse I feel after eating some of the above. What I'm experiencing is the healthier I am eating, the better I am feeling. And when I do slip up and indulge in some delicious goodies, my body naturally starts rejecting that food - and by rejecting I mean I get terrible stomach pains. Your body starts to get used to the healthy 'fuel' you put into your body, so when you go back to eating crap, your body practically tells you what you should or shouldn't be eating… but hey, I'm not perfect and I'm learning the hard way.
I haven't figured out a proper routine yet. As I said above, I'm still learning and I have so much more to learn. I'm only starting out but the things I have been doing has helped me loose that extra unwanted fat. I started the gym at 58kgs, and now I weigh 61.9kgs. But that fat has turned into muscle, and after 11 weeks I'm finally starting to see my body transform.
When I get to the gym, I start off with 10-15 mins of cardio. Then I move onto weights. Each day you should train a different part of your body. After weights, I end it with another 10-15mins of cardio. I go to the gym 6 days a week.
I have cut out so many bad foods which has also helped loose that extra fat, and I've been drinking a lot of water. Try to avoid processed foods and try to eat as much natural food as possible. Snack on fruit, veggies and nuts rather then biscuits, muesli bars and chips. Cut out all the soft drinks and replace that with water or natural smoothies with coconut water.
I'm not quite to where I want to be, but I'm getting there. I've never really woken up in the morning and thought "ugh, I cant be bothered going to the gym today", instead I wake up excited to go to the gym everyday because I know each time I step through those doors I will be getting closer to my goal. I enjoy spending time at the gym, especially when you have gym buddies to train with!
